How braces work
Braces use small brackets bonded to your teeth and a thin archwire that applies gentle, steady pressure. At regular adjustment visits the wire is changed or tightened, so your teeth move gradually into place. When your teeth are straight, a retainer holds them in their new position. Metal braces
Metal braces are the most widely used type. Small stainless-steel brackets are bonded to each tooth and the wire is held in place with elastic ties. They suit a wide range of crowded, gapped and bite problems, in adults as well as teenagers.
Self-ligating braces
Self-ligating braces use brackets with a built-in clip instead of elastic ties to hold the wire. Dr Deepthi can tell you whether self-ligating braces suit your teeth.
Invisalign® clear aligners
For some patients, removable clear aligners are an alternative to fixed braces. Your orthodontist compares braces and Invisalign® for your case at the assessment.
Your suitability assessment
Your first visit includes an examination, photos and an X-ray so the orthodontist can check your teeth, roots, jaws and bite. You then receive a written plan with the recommended type of braces, the estimated treatment time and the full price, so you can decide before anything starts.
Keeping teeth clean with braces
Brackets and wires trap food and plaque. Brush carefully after meals, clean between teeth with interdental brushes or floss threaders, and keep up regular professional teeth cleaning during treatment to protect your gums and avoid marks on the teeth.
Retainers after braces
When your braces come off, teeth naturally try to drift back. Wearing your retainers as instructed holds them in their new position and protects your result.

Do braces hurt?
Teeth often feel sore for a few days after braces are fitted and after adjustments. Soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief usually help.

What should I avoid eating with braces?
Hard, sticky and chewy foods such as nuts, toffee and chewing gum, which can break brackets. Cut harder foods into small pieces.
What should I do if a bracket or wire breaks?
Contact our clinic on WhatsApp for advice and to arrange an appointment. Avoid trying to adjust or remove the bracket or wire yourself. Our team can guide you on the next steps.
Will I need a retainer?
Yes. After braces come off, a retainer stops your teeth from drifting back.
